BACK ISSUES

DURING THE WINTER months, the POOCH youth have been making repairs and remodeling the Vollum Kennels. These kennels were the first ones built at Project POOCH. They were funded by the generosity of our original benefactor, JEAN VOLLUM, and constructed in 1994 by the youth in the MacLaren building trades class.

Over the ensuing 12 years, the walls made from fencing material have rusted and deteriorated. The dogs frequently got cuts on their feet and noses from the sharp edges of the fencing, and the fencing also provided inadequate protection from cold winds and blowing rain.

Thanks to grants from the JUAN YOUNG TRUST and the KAREN M. SCHROTH FOUNDATION FOR ANIMALS, POOCH was able to buy the materials to replace the fencing with solid panel enclosures that will make the kennels safer, weatherproof, and more comfortable for our dogs.

All the repairs were done by the youth now enrolled in Project POOCH under the oversight of kennel supervisor, ADAM BERGIN. Remodeling the kennels also gave the youths building experience and skills to list on their resumes for job hunting upon release from corrections.
