Message from
Bob Jester, OYA Director
“The Oregon Youth Authority's mandate is multi-faceted.
Our most important charge is to protect the public and hold youth
offenders accountable for their behavior. But at all levels of the organization,
our greatest challenge is to provide youth with opportunities to learn personal
responsibility, develop social skills, and make positive choices for themselves.
Our goal is to prevent youth from moving deeper into the juvenile justice or
the adult corrections systems.”

FROM SHAKESPEARE to Neil Sedaka, everybody agrees that it’s tough to say goodbye to friends.
The exception is saying goodbye to friends who have served their terms and are leaving corrections.
Then we are SO GLAD to see them go that we have to celebrate!
On May 5th, Project POOCH held a Parole Party for ALEX and CRUZ.
In addition to the other POOCH youths, their supervisors, and Joan Dalton, volunteers CHARLIE ALLIS,
BEVERLY and TED PAUL, TRACY LUCAS and MARK ORONZIO, SANDY and JERRY ZIMMER, and
CAROLYNE and GARY FILSINGER attended the party.
During their time in the program, Alex and Cruz have trained seven dogs respectively.
Alex is also a talented artist and frequently made pencil sketches of dogs he trained.
At the party, he expressed his appreciation to the volunteers by giving them some of his
favorite drawings in mats and frames.
Both youths leave Project POOCH with all of our best wishes for happy, productive futures as they re-enter the
community as free men.

To POOCH youths, MICHAEL and KEVIN, both of whom studied for and passed
the examination for American Kennel Club Pet Care
Technician Certification.

To JUDY JOHNSTON, dog groomer and owner of Faithful Companion
Grooming, Hubbard, OR. Judy began giving instruction in dog grooming
techniques to the POOCH youths in April.
