Project POOCH FAQ

Question: I want to visit Project POOCH and see the dogs.
How do I get there?

Answer: We would love to have you visit our kennels and introduce you to the dogs we have for adoption. Since MacLaren is a correctional facility, guests must schedule their visits in advance. Please call (503) 982-4492 to make an appointment.

Here are the driving directions to MacLaren Correctional Facility which is located approximately 22 miles South of Portland and 22 miles North of Salem:

IMPORTANT: ALL VISITS MUST BE SCHEDULED IN ADVANCE. People not on the Guest List will not be admitted to the facility. Leave cell phones and handbags in the trunk of your car. You will not be allowed to bring them inside.

From Portland:
Take I-5 South and exit at 282-A (Canby/Hubbard) onto Highway 99.
Stay on Highway 99 and go through the town of Hubbard.
Less than 1 mile past Hubbard, turn Left into MacLaren. (The cross street on the right is Industrial Avenue.)

From Salem:
Take I-5 North and exit at 271 (Woodburn).
Turn Right onto Highway 214 South.
Drive approximately 2½ miles to Junction Highway 99E.
Turn Left onto Highway 99E.
Turn Right into MacLaren.

If you get lost, call (503) 981-9531 and touch 0# twice. An operator will give you directions.

Question: I want to start a program like Project POOCH. Will you please send me information and materials to help me?

Answer: We wish you well in your undertaking, and will mail you a brochure with more information about Project POOCH and a consultation flier that lists the details to consider when starting a similar program. Because of the overwhelming number of requests for specific program information and the daily demands of Project POOCH, our POOCH creator and director, Joan Dalton, is available for phone consultation on the specifics of our organization and developing similar programs; the phone consultation fee is $75 per hour. There is also information about consultation services at Joan Dalton's consultation web site.

In 2005, Joan Dalton and Project POOCH offered a 5-day POOCH 101 Workshop for social services professionals preparing to start adoption/training programs for shelter dogs and youths in corrections. If you send your mailing and email address, we will contact you when the next workshop is scheduled.

Question: I can't keep my dog. Will Project POOCH take it?

Answer: No, Project POOCH cannot accept dogs from private individuals. All our dogs come from homeless shelters. They are often dogs that have been in the shelter for some time, and may be at risk to be euthanized.

We cannot take dogs from private parties because we are trying to teach the youth that dogs are a lifetime commitment regardless of situational changes. Many of these young men have themselves been abandoned by their families so accepting a dog that has been given up by its owners is very difficult on them.

Question: What should I do if I suspect an animal is being abused or neglected?

Answer: Animal cruelty by abuse or neglect is illegal in the State of Oregon and is considered a felony in 33 states.

To report an inhumane situation in the Portland, Oregon, metropolitan area, contact Oregon Humane Society (OHS) Investigations, (503) 285-7722, ext. 214 or fill out the online OHS Cruelty Complaint Form.
